FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW ARE UNIKOTI PIECES CRAFTED?
Each Unikoti piece was hand crafted. Sure we use power tools and instruments, but we take pride in the manual labour involved. Each piece presented here is not only designed but also crafted by the same person. So what you get is a piece that’s loved from the moment of ideation right up to the finishing touches. You also get a slightly different texture or shape even for limited edition items.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ALL THIS STUFF?
Depending on the specific item, between a week and three months. While a Buhaus can be finished in a week – or more if it receives an artist’s paint treatment – the wooden pieces usually take more. Burly for example took even longer because the basswood top had to undergo treatments and a lot of drying to be ready for use. We also use intricate production techniques that require testing and refining before we are confident in using them. For example, to find the right balance for the Buhaus plaster mix we tested over 10 types of different samples.
HOW DO YOU ENSURE QUALITY?
We are very detail oriented and pay attention even to stuff people don’t usually do. Because all pieces are hand crafted we handle and inspect each piece multiple times by the time it’s finished. We pay attention to materials and use different types according to aesthetic and structural reasons. That’s why for example we’re using hardwood for the feet and beam of the Buhaus. It would have been cheaper and easier to use fir tree wood but that would have been less structurally sound. The Strata boxes use a laminated approach to crafting with cold pressed veneers. This ensures a very strong composition and an interesting visual effect. Having said all that please bear in mind that small imperfections may be present. We view them as adding character, not detracting from it.
DO YOU DO CUSTOM WORK?
Yes. For examples of types of projects we can take on, have a look at our past and present pieces. Of course we can think of different approaches as well, and we’re ready to listen for ideas. We can work with companies as well as private individuals, as we’ve done before. Lamp F is a good example of a project for a company. We managed to make a custom design that communicated the client’s brand, incorporated their products and services, and used socially responsible packaging that also served as a diffusion box. In terms of timing, that project took about three months from design to production. With that in mind when asking for custom work, please contact us with your needs or ideas.
WHAT’S YOUR PROCESS?
We have a history of designing and then making things that better suit our tastes. Usually the need for something that isn’t available in quite the specific way we need it is enough to get us going into thinking how to make it ourselves. Then comes the design thinking, with a lot of sketches and sometimes 3D renderings taking time to think about materials and production techniques. Sometimes these ideas stay just ideas, but sometimes we’re happy enough with a solution that we put the effort in to prototype and refine the production process. And sometimes we’re even awarded for our efforts (see here and here). But the greatest joy is making something that is different, something that is physical, something that you can touch and cherish. Seeing your idea become real and appreciated.
SOME OF YOUR WORK IS UNUSUAL. WHY IS THAT?
We take pride in that our pieces tell a different story. They’re born out of a search for the new. Mass made products are everywhere these days, some of them very good. But our approach is striving to create pieces that are few, personal and well thought through. Our view is that an item however unusual a use case or look of it is, it should be consistent within its own paradigm.
WHAT KIND OF MATERIALS DO YOU USE AND HOW DO YOU SOURCE THEM?
For wood we use responsible wood distributors and reclaimed or salvaged material. We’re always looking for ways we can use both new and aged stuff to make something beautiful and practical. We find it interesting to find different uses for materials than that they were originally intended for. And do so in a responsible manner. The Buhaus plaster mix incorporates paper pulp. That paper is recycled from our own paper use. As much as possible we’re packing our pieces in recyclable material or recycled material.
